2007 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

September 12th, 2006-For fans of anything Italian or beautiful, today is your lucky day. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione – arguably the best looking Alfa Romeo ever – is ready for production and will be released at the Paris Motor Show. Its borrows heavily from Maserati talent, which is reflected in both the chassis and engine choices.

Much to our applause, the new 8C almost exactly mimics the concept car it’s based off. For instance, only slight details differentiate it from the prototype version first seen at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now included are 20 inch wheels, a front diffuser, chrome edging around the side window frame, front driving lights and a much higher ride height.

With a 450 bhp V8 desgined by in cooperation with Maserati, the Competizione remains true to its 8C heritage. The same designation was first used on Alfa’s eight cylinder prewar supercars which dominated motor sport during their best years. Of these cars, the 8C 2900 is the ultimate expression and won the best races as well as became a prestigious grand tourer.

The modern 8C features a carbon fibre body which is mated to a rather old steel Maserati chassis. This is the type of setback that can only be forgiven with such an achingly beautiful body. It draws inspiration from Alfa’s past including the gorgeous Tipo 33 Stradale and the Giulia TZ2 which is often called the mini-Ferrari 250 GTO. Fortunately, in creating the 8C, Alfas own design studio, Stile Center Alpha Romeo have steered clear of the retro trap that others have fallen into.

As the 8C is being produced by Maserati and Alfa, it takes advantage of their recent developments including an aluminum suspension, traction control, a flappy paddle six-speed gearbox and a continuous-phase valve train.

More details will be available after the 8C Competizione completes its world debut at the Paris Motor Show.
