Specializing in Coachbuilding, Radiator Recores & Fuel Tanks
Woods & Woods is a father and son coachbuilding business located on the Central Coast of the Australian state of New South Wales, just north of Sydney.
David Woods has been involved with older cars since his teens and after working for another restorer for 20-plus years set out on his own in 2003. Son Jayson served his apprenticeship with the same business and joined in with his father to form Woods & Woods.
David and Jayson operate as traditional coachbuilders, building bodies using blocking out, an English wheel, wooden bucks and of course hammers, dollies and folders. Timber framing and painting are also undertaken on the premises.
The first car undertaken by Woods and Woods was a Phantom 1 Rolls-Royce that required a complete radiator/grille rebuild, riveted exhaust system, engine rebuild, fuel tank and springs. That led on to another Phantom 1, then a body for an Italian OM, an Amilcar, drop-head Bentley and a Ducks-Back Alvis.
When Vintage Roadcar visited Woods and Woods, the workshop was certainly full of historic motor vehicles in various states of completion. An Armstrong Siddeley was having its corroded, original steel/alloy body rebuilt, while next to that was an Alvis Speed 20 with a new body being made over a new timber frame.
Neither David nor Jayson tend to specialize in any particular body material and are quite prepared to work with steel, aluminium or fabric. Both recognize that not everyone can afford the top-end vehicles, hence the Ford Falcon that was receiving the same expert care as other vehicles in the shop.
No longer do Woods & Woods undertake mechanical work, as there are a number of expert machine shops to carry out such work. So now they specialize exclusively in work that others are not doing such as coachbuilding, radiator recores, fuel tanks made from copper-riveted turnplate, nickel/silver work, brass radiator shells and silver soldering.
Other cars currently at Woods and Woods included a 25/30 Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin DB2, 12/50 Alvis, 1946 Chevy Utility, Daimler and a Sunbeam. Most clients of Woods & Woods have come from within New South Wales, but there have been others from around Australia and some from overseas.
In addition to the coachbuilding, David and Jayson has designed their own vehicle featuring a V16 billet engine emulating the style of the 1930s with all-Australian manufactured products.
