The first time I went to VIR-ginia International Raceway was in 1960, and road courses like this pastoral gem were normal. You expected to see fast curves through a natural, naked landscape. For me, anyway, there was a tingly sense of drama and magnitude arising from both the simple purity of the set- ting and the obvious raw risk.
