McLaren F1 – 241mph Speed Record
Would you believe that Gordon Murray explained that he never intended for the McLaren F1 to be the fastest car in the world. He said it over and over. He wanted to build ultimate road car. Focused, no compromises, just the best car.
Turns out it was fast as hell in a straight line too. 241mph fast in face.
We thought this would be a good time to put up the record breaking 240.1 mph run by McLaren F1 prototype XP5 from way back in 1998. It is amazing footage. Here is video from the cockpit on March 31, 1998, when the McLaren recorded its highest speed ever. Andy Wallace took prototype XP5 for a blitz on the 5.6-mile main straight of Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track.
The F1 was the fastest production car for over a decade.
