Drifting Effortlessly
Top Gear recently posted a video to its YouTube channel of Chris Harris driving around a racetrack in the Ferrari SF90 Stradale. The video is focused on one thing and really one thing only, drifting the SF90.
Harris wanted to see what the 1,000 hp hybrid car is like when you get it out at the edge of its limits. With the Ferrari handling control of the slippage of the rear wheels, the car drifts pretty much effortlessly. Harris notes that he can bury the throttle and just let the car do its thing. He says the mode that he has the car in should simply be called “drift mode.”
However, things are a bit different with the ESC switched off. As soon as he does that, the car fights him a little bit because it’s trying to decide where to throw power while he monitors the throttle. The simple fact of the matter is that there’s a disconnect because there are essentially two drivers. There are Chris and the computers onboard the SF90. They’re both doing their best to keep the car doing what it’s supposed to do. However, it makes it a bit hard for Chris to handle the car, though he manages to keep things under control.
You can check out the video below. It’s full of beautiful red curves, a small English man in a Ferrari, and lots of tire smoke.
