The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is more than a supercar; it is a luxurious Gran Turismo. Powered by a 5.5-liter supercharged V8 engine from AMG, it delivers 617bhp, making it one of the most powerful engines in a production sports car.
In 2009, the ‘Stirling Moss’ edition was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show. Designed by Yoon Il-hun, this roofless, windscreen-less speedster was inspired by the 1955 SLR and honored Stirling Moss’s 1955 Mille Miglia victory.
The Stirling Moss was approximately 200kg lighter than the standard SLR, and its supercharged V8 engine, producing 641 horsepower, allowed it to accelerate to 100km/h in under 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 350km/h (220mph).
Production began in June 2009, and all 75 units were completed by December 2009. These cars were available only to existing SLR owners, making them highly coveted modern classics. Offered with just 45 kilometers on the odometer, this car is expected to fetch as much as $4,150,000 USD at RM Sotheby’s Tegernsee Auction this coming July 27.
