Mike Smith and his brother, Pat, started shooting pictures of Southern California drag racing when they were kids in the ’50s. By the ’60s, the brothers had caught the road racing bug and began shooting at places like Riverside Raceway and Ontario Motor Speedway.
This month’s featured Web site contains a large number of the brothers’ photos, most available for purchase. Photographs are organized first by type of racing and include Can-Am, Trans-Am, IROC, F5000, IMSA GTP, NASCAR and drag racing. Within each category the photos are sub-divided by driver, which in turn is organized by event, in some cases over a number of years.
Though the scope is limited predominantly to races at Riverside, there are some interesting shots here, many with captions and brief historical notes. The brothers claim to have thousands of negatives that they are attempting to post on the site, so it may be worth checking back occasionally to see what’s new.
