Spotlight Shines on Mecum Spring Auction

Few auctions in the world can match Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic for variety, and fewer still are able to compete with the sheer number of vehicles offered for sale. Billed as the “World’s Largest Collector Car Auction,” this annual rite of spring stretches across six days at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana from May 15-20, 2012. Dana Mecum speaking about the Silver Anniversary event, said, “This is what I envisioned my auction to be in the beginning, it took 25 years for everyone else to catch up.” Once again, more than 2,100 lots will cross the block under the spotlight provided by the 32 hours of live coverage broadcast nationally on Discovery’s Velocity Network: Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More.

This 25th Anniversary event has something for almost every class of collector, with Ferraris from three decades sharing the stage with American collectors cars from the prewar era to those fresh off the factory floor, and unexpected surprises from England, Japan and Germany as well. With Mecum, muscle predominates, and the 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra (CSX 2121), 1967 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro, 1963 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 driven by Mickey Thompson at Bonneville, the last 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 to roll down the assembly line highlight  the astounding array of Corvettes offered for sale, are just some of the ‘star’ lots that are expected to be the focus of heavy bidding. Also of interest are two former Meadow Brook winners, a 1933 Lincoln KB Phaeton and a 1926 Stutz Model 695 Roadster, as well as an exquisite 1952 Allard K3 that combines traditional British construction with Cadillac power.

Taking center stage on Saturday will be NHRA drag racing legends, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and “TV” Tommy Ivo, who will watch their history making dragsters roll across the block. Prudhomme will offer his record breaking 1982 Pontiac Trans Am “Pepsi Challenger” from his own collection, and the 1974 Streamlined Top Fuel Dragster piloted, and more famously crashed, by Ivo will go up for sale moments later. The auction is open to the general public and attendees can participate for just $15 per day and the action can be followed live at www.Mecum.com. For more information, call (262) 275-5050.
