Report and photos by Paul Smith
The Seattle-based Society Of Vintage Race ENthusiasts (SOVREN) conducted its annual Spring Sprints event on May 2-4, 2014 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington.
Pacific Raceways hosts road racing, drag racing and kart racing in the hills above Kent, Washington. The 2.25-mile road course includes ten turns, elevation changes and challenges for even experienced drivers. The location is picturesque from any view point, and operates year round.
Friday was not only a test-and-tune day, but an opportunity for novice drivers to win qualification to race in 2014 SOVREN events. Over Saturday and Sunday, drivers were challenged by waves of “Seattle Sunshine,” making visibility something only enjoyed by cars out in front. The wet track, with some oily spots, combined with low visibility to make this an unexpectedly costly weekend for some, and very exciting one for all.
One of the cars catching much attention was the “Star Mazda,” driven by Allen Karlberg. It is actually a Super V, with 1999cc displacement Volkswagen Brabham engine. With aerodynamic and ground effect additions, the car and driver were impressive. Hard to believe the consistent leader of the pack was a SV, yet the only cars in front of Karlberg were pace cars and ones that he was lapping.
The 2014 SOVREN season is going to be exciting.
