Russo & Steele Shatter Ferrari Record

Russo & Steel’s three-day auction during August’s Monterey Car Week reinforced owner Drew Alcazar’s decision last year to move the event to Fishermen’s Wharf, as more than 10,000 enthusiasts streamed through the event’s tents, generating more than $7.1 million in total sales.

The top lot at Russo & Steele proved to be a handsome 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter Berlinetta, one of only 37 166 Inter chassis built in all, and one of just 10 bodied by Stabilimenti Farina, which sold for $1.05 million and eclipsed the previous record for the model by more than $250,000.

Russo’s other top sellers included the first Cobra ever sold to the public from Shelby American’s West Coast operations (CSX2012) for $850,000, a 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS at $247,500, followed by “book-end” Shelby GT500s comprising a concours-winning first-year example from 1967 selling for $159,500 and an extremely rare final-series 1970 Super Cobra Jet/Drag Pack car in brilliant Grabber Yellow selling for $134,750. Other notable sales included a 1956 Lincoln Mark II Coupe for $112,500 and a 1958 Lancia B20 GT Coupe for $110,000.
