Gulf-Mirage 1967 to 1982
No stranger to VR readers, our European Editor Ed McDonough not only test drives and writes about unique racecars, but also has a growing bibliography of books devoted to various significant machines. As part of Veloce Publishing’s series on the “WSC Giants” Ed has previously written about the history of the Matra prototypes, and in this latest work explores the fascinating history of the John Wyer-built Gulf Mirages.
In 1966, John Wyer, John Horsman and John Willment set up JW Automotive Engineering Ltd., to take over production of the Ford GT40. In 1967 JW produced its own update of the racing GT40, the Mirage. With financing from Gulf Oil, the Mirage would evolve and succeed in prototype racing well into the 1980s.
In this book McDonough chronicles both the Mirage’s development and its racing career, including the full competition record of each individual chassis and a season-by-season account of the team’s racing exploits, as well as profiles of all the drivers and personalities that made Mirage a fascinating and successful organization. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a book by McDonough if he didn’t manage to get himself behind the wheel for his own take on what made the Mirage so great! With a 128 pages of rare color and b/w photos, there is a tremendous amount of information packed into this excellent little book.
