Formula 1 in Camera, 1960-69: Volume 2
By Paul Parker
Thankfully, renown motor racing photographer Paul Parker has found a new publisher to continue his “In Camera” series, since Haynes no longer publish books of that type. It is a relief to know we’re not being deprived of another peek into his tremendous picture archive. If it’s a dose of nostalgia you need, then Paul has served up a particularly brilliant tome to transport the reader back to a time of relative innocence and a golden age of our sport.
In the early part of the decade, the power base had been wrenched from the big Italian front-engine cars to the more lighter and nimble rear-engine racers from the UK, including Cooper, Lotus and BRM. Volume 2 fills some of the gaps left from Volume 1 and treats us to the delights of some of the greatest events of the decade including the now defunct non-championship races such as the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, the International Trophy at Silverstone and Oulton Park’s Gold Cup meeting. Although non-championship, these races drew the great and good in the sport. It is a decade where, for the most part, national colors were still the order of the day (until the latter end of the 1960s when cars became 150 mph mobile advertising platforms.) As aerodynamics were discovered, wings and appendages of all shapes and sizes appeared on cars as they morphed toward a style to which we now are accustomed.
The stunning photographic images are complemented by text relaying a resumé of each racing season followed by a race-by-race commentary. This book will be on many a wish list for Christmas—if you can wait that long for a truly sentimental journey back to your youth!
