Motor Racing at Thruxton – in the 1980s
By Bruce Grant-Braham
The latest volume in publisher Veloce’s “Those were the days…” series, Motor Racing at Thruxton in the 1980s, takes the reader back three decades to the days when the former WWII air base regularly hosted rounds of the FIA Formula Two championship, as well as the British F3 and Touring Car championships, providing great memories of who raced what, then and there.
Located in Hampshire, southwest of London (and along the way to Stonehenge), Thruxton bills itself as the UK’s fastest racing circuit and remains in operation today, but this book is a look back over a quarter century to see where some of the great names revered by our sport first gained prominence.
Filled with evocative images from the day, this book tells the tale of racing drivers wanting to test themselves against each other as well as this quick 2.36-mile stretch of twisty asphalt. F2, F3, F3000, Formula Ford, the Interserie and the BTCC all took to the Thruxton pavement and those exploits are recollected here.
There are segments about the track record holders, the Easter Monday Meeting tradition and brief annual recaps for the various competing series. Drivers who excelled at Thruxton are also highlighted, making for a nice little packet of memories, all in all.
