Kings of the Nürburgring
By Chris Nixon
Of all the world’s motor racing circuits, Germany’s Nürburgring is perhaps the most evocative. Soon after construction was finalized in 1927, it developed a reputation for excitement, danger and demanding racing. Amazingly, there has never been a book in English on the circuit, until now, thanks to noted writer Chris Nixon, who has previously brought us excellent work on such greats as Richard Seaman, Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins.
The book starts off with an historical overview of the circuit, from when it was built—during the Great Depression by Dr. Otto Creutz—to the present day. Next, Nixon delves into an analysis of 14 great drivers who, in their time, became known as “Kings of the Nürburgring” including such great names as Caracciola, Nuvolari, Fangio, Moss, Hill (Phil and Graham), Clark, Surtees, Stewart and Ickx. Motorsport enthusiasts will find each chapter quite fascinating as it describes in detail each driver’s earliest encounters with the Ring before moving on to their most famous exploits. There is also a magic description of a quick lap by Tony Brooks behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBR1. Any automotive publication relies on its photos and the majority in this book are simply magnificent.
