Delahaye – Styling and Design
By Richard S. Adatto and Diana E. Meredith
The noted French manufacturer Delahaye began manufacturing automobiles as early as 1896 and, despite two wars, continued through 1954, when the company was eventually closed. Across this almost 60-year time period, Delahaye produced a variety of vehicles from utilitarian passenger vehicles to industrial trucks and fire engines. However, it was during the period from 1920–1950 where Delahaye produced some of the most stunning custom-bodied automobiles and racecars of all time. In “Delahaye—Styling and Design” noted French auto authority Richard Adatto and Diana Meredith, examine each of the models that helped leave this lasting French legacy.
After a brief historical synopsis of the Delahaye history, the authors then examine each model, by looking at significant examples built by the various French coachbuilders. With the help of truly elegant studio photography by Michael Furman, each chassis study is a mouth-watering visual treat that will leave any warm-blooded auto enthusiast longing to own one of these lusty beauties. Of course, no examination of the Delahaye marque would be complete without an investigation of its many prewar motorsport triumphs. As such, over a third of this book is devoted to the racecars that launched the Delahaye name onto the worldwide stage. Seven significant racecars are examined in-depth, including the 135 S, the 145 and the 155, as well as the famous Million Franc Prize-winner.
All in all, this book is not only interesting to read, but also a true visual treat that will mesmerize any enthusiast with the seductive images of these curvaceous creations.
