[Book Review] Stirling Moss Scrapbook 1929–1954

Stirling Moss Scrapbook

This, the third installment in the Moss Scrapbook series, is interesting in that it delves into Moss’s early years, before he became an international star.

As in the previous volumes, this work is a fascinating compilation of press clippings, family photos and personal remembrances, both from Moss’s own collection as well as others. Starting with Moss as an infant, in his mother Aileen’s arms, we see Moss mature, go to school, discover “crumpet” (as he likes to refer to the ladies!), and begin his motorsport career. There is a large number of pages devoted to Moss’s early 500-cc racing (including his many successes behind the wheel of a Kieft), as well as his sometimes-trying Grand Prix ascension with the likes of BRM, HWM and the Cooper-Alta.

As the book enters the ’50s, we see Moss gain international notoriety behind the wheel of a Jaguar C-type and then begin to enjoy real success at the wheel of the Maserati 250F, before signing on with Mercedes for the 1955 season. Wonderfully produced in large format, this installment is yet another fascinating, voyeuristic look into Moss’s life. If you own the previous installments, you’ll have to get this one too!
