Porsche Racing Cars: 1953-1975 and 1976-2005
By Brian Long
The mystique of the Porsche marque has author Long firmly in its grasp, for he has an extensive collection of titles dealing with the iconic German cars to his credit. This two-volume set, however, concentrates on the most important Porsches of them all, those built for racing.
The tale begins with the birth of Ferdinand Porsche, and all the well-chronicled steps he and his son took in the creation of the marque are again laid out for our consumption. From there, the racing involvement almost naturally follows. As the development of Porsche’s engines mirrored the regulations for international motor sport, it became apparent that this was a company meant to go racing.
That still ongoing tale began, of course, with the 550, the first Porsche created specifically for the track, and continues through the various numeric and alphanumeric designations we have come to know and love. It’s all laid out in great detail, with extensive photography telling as much of this compelling story as the words, a must for any Porschephile.
Available for US$89.95 (£45) each, the two volumes can be ordered directly from the publisher, Veloce Publishing at www.veloce.co.uk
