Mark Donohue: Technical Excellence at Speed
By Michael Argetsinger
The difficulty in chronicling a career as diverse as Mark Donohue’s is that there are so many tales to tell it becomes difficult to know, as Bob Seger says, “what to leave in, what to leave out.”
Because his three years of research yielded an amazing amount of anecdote and information, author Argetsinger—for whom this is the follow-up to his award-winning Walt Hansgen biography—has given us a book in a more novelesque style than we’ve come to expect from publisher David Bull. This in no way detracts from the finished product and may, in fact, be an embellishment, since a photo is reputed to be worth only a thousand words, and those replacing each “missing” image have been put to excellent use. Most readers will be familiar with the mainstream of Donohue’s career, but this book looks deep inside the life that surrounded those achievements to illuminate the driven man behind them, and we cannot recommend it too highly.
The basic edition is offered by Bull Publishing (www.bullpublishing.com) for the $39.95, and there is a limited-run Publisher’s Edition ($99.95) featuring autographs from close Donohue associates and an audio CD where Mark discusses his experiences at the 1966 Daytona 24 Hours.
