Klemantaski & Aston Martin

By Louis Klemantaski & Chris Nixon

Klemantaski and Nixon are two names synonymous with the world of automotive history. Therefore, their combined efforts would have to produce a great book. In the case of “Klemantaski and Aston Martin,” Klemantaski’s splendid photos have been combined with Nixon’s well-written text to provide a unique inside look at Aston Martin’s racing efforts during the ’50s.

As an Aston Martin codriver and semi-official photographer, Klemantaski, was always near the action (he codrove in 1953 with Reg Parnell, and then with Peter Collins in three Mille Miglias.) In his 10 years with Aston Martin, Klemantaski was able to capture the cars and drivers in a way perhaps no one else could. Whether in the pits, at the start, or on the track, his unparalleled access allowed him to create a body of inspired photographs.

One of the many strengths of Klemantaski’s work is his ability to capture the landscapes and backgrounds of this era. This talent really allows the viewer to get a sense of the informal atmosphere and the conditions present during motor races of the ’50s.

As you scrutinize and drool over these large format images, you will also appreciate the talent and courage it took to take them. Whether standing on the track’s edge, inches from a hurling mass of metal passing by at 60-100 mph or sitting next to a World Champion driver racing at 10/10’s, while trying to take a great shot, Klemantaski’s dedication and commitment is evident in every photograph.

“Klemantaski & Aston Martin” takes the reader from 1948 and the DB2, to 1959 and the DBR1’s victory in the Sports Car World Championship and the 24-Hours of Le Mans.

Great book, great photos, and a great opportunity to own a Klemantaski classic. Cost: $199.00 Available from: Classic Motorbooks (800-826-6600)
