Mosport — Four Decades of Racing
By Bob Bockington
Canada’s Mosport International Raceway turned 40 years old last year, and for a 40-year-old, the track does not show its age. Extensive renovations have provided a facelift for the home of Canadian motor sport, which has generated so much excitement over the years for both drivers and fans alike. In “Mosport: Four Decades of Racing,” track historian Bob Brockington not only rekindles memories for fans who were at the track for so many thrilling races, he also provides a wealth of information for enthusiasts whose interest lies in the history of international and Canadian motorsport.
Mosport opened for club races on June 3, 1961 with a small club event, but organizers of races at Mosport have always jumped into racing with both feet, and before the year was out, a professional event was held with Stirling Moss winning the first Players 200. From that time onward, there have been a wide variety of events at Mosport; stock car races, Can-Am races, international motorcycle GPs and Formula One Grands Prix have graced this 2.459-mile road course.
This book takes on a monumental task in chronicling the 40 years of racing at Mosport but it accomplishes it in a style which is both informative and interesting. The 138-page soft bound book treats each decade of racing with its own chapter and a wealth of quality black and white photos. In addition to the four decades of automotive road racing, Brockington also delves into Mosport’s history as a motorcycle venue (on-road and off) and as a short oval with the many races held at Mosport Speedway.
“Mosport: Four Decades of Racing” is a thoroughly researched, well illustrated book that would be an invaluable trip down memory lane for anyone who either raced or spectated there in years past or a valuable resource for the racing enthusiast who wants to learn more about Canada’s premier racetrack. A very limited number of copies are available either trackside or from the Mosport International Web site at a cost of $10 (Canadian).
