The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix 2013 was held July 19-20 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. An estimated crowd of more than 250,000 spectators visited the 10-day festival that culminated with the 31st annual races staged on the scenic, yet technically challenging circuit at Schenley Park.
The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is unique in America, as it’s the only vintage car race staged on public roads amidst the public 456-acre Schenley Park.
The 2.33 mile circuit is comprised of 23 turns, complete with two lane roads, bridges with stone walls, curbs, manhole covers and telephone poles.
A field of more than 150 vintage race cars participating in the 2013 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. Notable and interesting entries traversing the challenging Schenley Park track included Alan Patterson’s 1956 Allard Coupe and 1958 Elva Mark III; Ray Morgan’s 1928 Riley Brookland; Joe Parlanti’s 1959 Fiat Abarth 750 GT Zagato; Mark Maehling’s 1969 Abarth Scorpione SS; Jeff Snook’s 1956 Lotus Eleven; Tony Parella’s 1934 Chevrolet Indy Car; Miles Whitlock’s 1919 Ford Model T Speedster; Robert Duell’s 1955 Panhard Dyna Junior; Klaus Selbert’s 1960 BMW 700 Sport and Peter Rehl’s 1957 Cooper/Norton Mk X1; among others.
Photographer Michael DiPleco documented the vintage racing action from the 2013 PVGP, offering the following gallery of pictures that not only show the field of historic race cars, but also the unique setting of the race track staged at Schenley Park.
