Next Level Custom Builds: From Kei Trucks to Lifted Porsches

Car culture is full of extremes but some of the coolest rides aren’t about speed alone. They’re bold, unexpected, and unforgettable. From rolling art to off-road ready exotics, today’s custom creations push the boundaries of what cars can be. Let’s take a look at some of the most unique builds shaking up the scene.

Custom Kei Trucks: Tiny Trucks, Big Style

For the uninitiated, Kei trucks are compact Japanese vehicles originally built for navigating small streets and hauling modest loads.

With how inventive car enthusiasts get, it’s not surprising that these micro machines have become cult favorites in the custom scene. You can find them slammed to the ground, lifted for light off-roading, or turning heads with widebody kits and sick vinyl wraps.

If that’s not crazy enough, check out this 40hp time attack kei truck that was featured at SEMA in 2023, fitted with 15-inch Work Meister CR01 on Toyo Proxes RR slicks, front, rear, and side diffusers, a front splitter, and a set of Moton coilovers. Absolutely bananas.

If this is your scene, then it’s worth knowing that Oiwa Garage is one of the largest and most reputable brands around with a ton of clout and some of the best gear to boot. They’ve built a following around celebrating the Kei lifestyle with accessories and full on builds that combine functionality with flair.

Pushing Into The Future: Cybertrucks And Beyond

If you thought the Tesla Cybertruck couldn’t get more attention grabbing, this custom build from Mexican tuner Billion Group has just proved otherwise. Not only does it have a full widebody kit, massive 26 inch wheels, it also got a slick gloss black wrap that actually makes the stainless steel wedge look a bit more refined.

The wide arches give the truck an aggressive stance, and they’ve done some extra work to keep it functional. The rear passenger arch still houses the charging port, so cables were likely extended to make the design work. The rear facing cameras in the front arches are still intact too, which is no small feat considering the size of these fenders.

The front bumper was completely replaced, followed by a bold rear spoiler, and an LED light bar that includes their logo. It’s all very over the top, but that’s kind of the point. Whether or not it’s your style, this build is definitely turning heads.

Wheels Can Make Or Break The Build

One of the most defining features of any custom ride is the wheel setup. They’re more than just a functional part of the build; wheels set the tone and are frequently one of the first things that draw your eyes in in any custom build, including the ones on this list. The right set of wheels adds aggression, refinement, or a sense of purpose. So, if your goal is to turn heads at a show or tackle tough terrain, the right wheel setup can elevate a build from interesting to unforgettable.

Among the most popular styles are multi-spoke wheels, known for their race-ready appearance and sharp, intricate designs. These are often seen on performance builds and track-focused cars where strength and weight reduction are crucial, especially if you’re rocking a big brake kit. Then there’s the classic deep-dish wheel, prized for its aggressive lip and wide stance. Deep-dish designs often show up on widebody or slammed builds, helping fill out those fender flares with purpose.

Lastly, the design, diameter, offset, and finish all play a part in the final look. Painted finishes like matte black or polished chrome wheels contribute to a ride’s attitude just as much as bodywork or paint. If you’re serious about a custom project, take a look at how the builds below take wheels into account. They aren’t just an afterthought but a foundation of the build’s visual identity.

Lifted Porsches: Trail Meets Track

When you think Porsche, you probably picture high-speed corners and pristine asphalt, but that’s not all Porsches are about, especially this Safari-style Porsche 930 owned by Kai Burkhard out of Germany.

This ride blends Porsche’s performance pedigree with trail capability that retains the 930’s signature style. Modifications include, but aren’t limited to, H&S custom coilovers, a 3.5 winch, custom roof rack, LED lights, a roll cage, and a fresh repaint to cap it all off.

Not only that, this offroad 911 kicks it up a notch with a set of Hankook Dynapro M/T 215/85R16 for a total diameter of 30”. The aggressive wheels are eye-catching and give lifted builds the stance and clearance they need.

Track Spec Vans: Built for Speed, Not Delivery

Our list doesn’t stop here. Just imagine a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter cutting through corners on a racetrack lowered suspension, racing seats, slick tires, and even turbocharged engines. Track spec vans might seem like a joke at first, but they’re legit performance machines that blend utility with speed in the most unconventional way.

For instance, Ford built a SuperVan that’s an electric one-off, outfitted with three motors spitting out 1400 hp, allowing it to tackle the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb in a measly 43.98 seconds. In terms of aerodynamics, it features a massive carbon fiber rear wing (gotta have that downforce), a front splitter, and a lightweight chassis tuned for agility and strength. Other upgrades include magnesium forged wheels on Pirelli P Zero rubber and carbon ceramic brakes.

This unique build can’t be considered a track spec van per se, but was built to surprise and entertain, demonstrating that even the most practical platforms can be turned into track day weapons with the right engineering and a bold imagination.

Art Cars: Canvas Meets Carbon Fiber

Custom-painted supercars are nothing new, but the concept of an art car, a vehicle transformed into a moving piece of artwork, has evolved into a genre all its own. A prime example is the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo Art Car by Vexx, proving that exotic shapes and visual storytelling go hand in hand.

The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo was originally created for Gran Turismo 7 as a digital concept car. It’s fully electric, with dual motors producing 1,098 horsepower, a zero to 100 km/h time of just 2.1 seconds, and a top speed of 350 km/h. While it was made for the virtual world, Porsche also built a full-size model that became something truly unique at Gamescom 2022.

Belgian artist Vexx was invited to transform the life-size Vision GT into a one-of-a-kind art car using his bold, cartoon-inspired style. Working live at the event, he started with red and white checkers as a nod to the racing flag, then layered in playful doodles like a cartoon horse and flowers with PlayStation icons in the center. The process took about a week, including time for sketching, painting, and inking the final lines.

It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?

Off-Road Builds: Post Apocalyptic Cool

This off-road Lamborghini Gallardo is one of those wild custom builds that turns heads and sparks conversation. Originally a 2004 Gallardo, this car has been heavily modified into a lifted, rally-inspired machine that looks like it’s straight out of Mad Max (minus all the rust).

It gives off some major Huracán Sterrato vibes as this Gallardo has been raised significantly and equipped with oversized off-road tires housed under extended fender flares. The roof rack has a full-size spare tire, plus a a roof-mounted light bar and additional rally lights which gives it serious Dakar vibes.

However, it looks just a bit too clean for us to think that it’s been modified for true offroading, but it it was, stock Gallardo performance specs would give it more than enough power to do so as it comes with a 5.0-liter V-10 putting out 493 horsepower in AWD.

There’s No Set Way To The Car Life

Custom cars are all about pushing limits of design, performance, and creativity. Whether you’re building a Kei truck with attitude or giving a Porsche permission to play in the mud, the message is clear: there are no rules. Just imagination, passion, and the road ahead.
