Thanks to vintage races, such as the 2002 Monterey Historics shown here, we can still appreciate ageless lovelies like Jaguar's D-type. And her beauty went all the way through: the "D-Jag" was arguably the most important sports car of 1956, the Le Mans winner that year, and also in both '55 and '57. Its luscious curves and lovely twin-cam, production-based motorÑmounted in frontÑseemed like the perfect design. A little aerodynamic instability? Just put a "feather" on it. 2006 already! Those mileposts are just whizzing by, aren’t they? I feel like I’m riding up Pikes Peak with Bobby Unser and he’s out to scare me (the boy is known for that).

Living on the edge is fun. After all, that’s why we’ve gathered here today. But every so often it’s nice to pull over, let the motor and the mind cool off, and gaze back down the mountain, drink in the view, see how far we’ve come.
