Mecum Auctions billed its massive, annual Kissimmee, Florida, sale as the largest collector car auction in the world. Held from January 17-26, it offered a dizzying 2,750 cars and more than 3,000 items of Road Art throughout the 10 days of sales. Total auction sales reached a massive $63,435,490, with 1,759 of the vehicles exchanging hands for a sell-through rate of 64 percent. Despite nationwide weather problems, resulting in thousands of cancelled flights throughout the Northeast and Midwest, the auction still managed to attract over 70,000 spectators and bidders.
Top lot of the marathon sale was an unrestored 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda selling for a stunning $560,000. Rounding out the top five sales recorded was a clutch of desirable Chevrolet Corvettes including a 1968 L88 Coupe ($530,000), a 1969 L88 Convertible ($510,000) and a 1963 Z06 Tanker ($475,000).
Among the many European makes crossing the block, Porsche again grabbed the spotlight with 40 of the 60 examples selling. Top sellers from the Stuttgart manufacturer included a Gemini Metallic ’73 911S Coupe selling for $200,000 and a ’58 356A 1600 Super Cabriolet changing hands for $195,000.
