Historic Trans-Am Roars in Long Beach

The Historic Motor Sports Association staged an exhibition race for Historic Trans-Am cars as part of the festivities surrounding the 44thrunning of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach last weekend, featuring the pony cars that made the SCCA’s original Trans-American Sedan Championship a huge draw in the late ’60s and early ’70s.

More than 30 Trans-Am cars turned out for the event, led by 13 Chevrolet Camaros and 11 Ford Mustangs that were supplemented by single examples of Mercury Cougar (above), Dodge Challenger, AMC Javelin, Pontiac GTO, Dodge Dart and Chevy Nova. The well-received event not only celebrated the popular sedan series, but also triggered memories of the drivers who originally drove these cars, men with names like Mark Donohue, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Jim Hall and Bob Tullius, among others.
