GTO Shatters All-Time Record

Chassis 5111GT sells  for $52 million

A Series I Ferrari 250 GTO (Chassis #5111), once owned by American collector Paul Pappalardo was confirmed to have changed hands in a private sale for $52 million—making it the most expensive documented sale. Originally sold to Jean Guichet in 1963, Guichet and Jose Behra drove the GTO to overall victory in that year’s Tour de France. Guichet backed up that victory with a 2nd place in the Tour the following year.

The car then was subsequently sold to Road & Track writer Henry Manney III, before moving on to Chris Cord and then Don Fong, and ultimately being purchased by Pappalardo in 1974. Papparlardo has owned the car until recently, with conflicting reports stating that it may have traded hands to a collector in Spain, before being sold to the unnamed new owner for $52 million.
