1965 Le Mans Artwork
Artist Matthew Stevens paints an evocative picture of the 1967 running of the 24-hour classic.
The 1965 Le Mans ended with all six Ford GT40s retiring while 1966 brought the famous three-car finish where Ford achieved its aim of domination over Ferrari with its Mark IIs. There were 12 GT40s entered for 1967. The yellow Mark IV of Bruce McLaren/Mark Donohue, wearing Number 2, finished 4th, with the Number 57 car of Paul Hawkins/Ronnie Bucknum, a Mark IIB, retiring after 17 hours. A.J.Foyt passed the finish line 30 miles ahead of the Ferrari P4 of Scarfiotti/Parkes, in the red Mark IV (Number 1) he shared with Dan Gurney, so proving the superiority of the so-called J-Cars and securing a new record distance of 3,249.6 miles at an average of 135.48 mph. However, the race was not without incident for Number 2. The car had a rear-hinged tail (that the Shelby team had objected to), which opened on the Mulsanne straight and was ripped off. It finished the race with the tail held in place with tape.
