In what is described as one of the most sensational moves in 2020, Sebastian Vettel this morning announced that he has signed with Aston Martin F1 Racing, which will be the new name of BWT Racing Point after the 2020 season. Sergio Perez released a shock announcement yesterday that he is leaving BWT Racing Point at the end of 2020.
At 33 years old, Vettel is considered an “old man” in the sport, but brings with him years of excellence and experience to help develop the new AMF1 car into the best challenger for the 2021 title.
About the signing, which is for “2021 and beyond,” Vettel had the following to say:
I am pleased to finally share this exciting news about my future. I’m extremely proud to say that I will become an Aston Martin driver in 2021. It’s a new adventure for me with a truly legendary car company. I have been impressed with the results the team has achieved this year and I believe the future looks even brighter.
The energy and commitment of Lawrence [Stroll] to the sport is inspiring and I believe we can build something very special together. I still have so much love for Formula 1 and my only motivation is to race at the front of the grid. To do so with Aston Martin will be a huge privilege.
While Sebastian’s current year at Ferrari has been a fairly dismal one with multiple technical issues with the SF1000 F1 car, he has shown during demonstration drivers in older Ferrari’s that he still has a lot of pace. This move, along with Ricciardo to McLaren, Sainz Jr to Ferrari, and some drivers yet to announce if they are staying or going, is setting 2021 up to be one of the most exciting years in motorsport.
