Automotive Art – Chris Phillips’ “Exiting Arnage”

Jaguar D-Type Artwork

Chris Phillips depicts Ron Flockhart and his Ecurie Ecosse D-Jaguar heading for a repeat win at Le Mans.

Le Mans 1957 represented the high water mark for Jaguar’s iconic D-Type.  Handicapped by the reduction of engine size to 3-liters for the 1958 season, the D-Type was never to win again at Le Mans. However, the model, having won the previous two 24-hour races, cemented its hat trick by achieving an overwhelming 1st through 4th and 6th-place result at the 1957 event. Because the factory had retired from racing at the end of 1956, the flag was carried by privateers in 1957, albeit with works assistance. The Scottish team Ecurie Ecosse repeated their previous year’s victory and scored a convincing 1-2 with the Flockhart/Bueb car (XKD606) winning from the sister car of Sanderson/Lawrence (XKD603). Ron Flockhart is shown here accelerating out of Arnage corner on the way to his second win in as many years at La Sarthe.
