Fifty years ago, petrolheads woke one morning to discover that their life had changed, their horizons had widened. Suddenly there was the Jaguar E-Type, the most beautiful car in the world (Enzo said so) and priced less than four, basic 850-cc Minis—translate to the cheapest Korean import.

In the UK, a Ferrari cost nearly four times as much, and a Ferrari was something then to be used only as a party frock. The E-Type was a car that could match a Ferrari for style and performance, yet there was likely to be a dealer in your area.
