DT Engineering
When one hears the title Dawn Treader, for a split second one is transported back into the fictional and fantasy world of Narnia and the imaginings of author C.S. Lewis. The name, Shackleton, moves one into the authentic and heroic age of exploration. Lastly, Sywell Aerodrome, is a venue that in decorative terms has remained in the magical “art deco” style of the late 1920s when it was built. However, none of these are real clues as to the business of Dawn Treader Performance Engineering Ltd., Shackleton Hangar, Sywell Aerodrome, in the UK.
DT Performance Engineering’s Managing Director, Patrick Morgan, has his DNA cast deeply in automotive engineering in the form of his late father, Paul Morgan—the “mor” of Ilmor—and founder of the very same. Carrying on this family trait, Patrick`s company specializes in the exacting restoration of the more exotic racing cars, particularly the 1980s turbo cars that are now becoming popular. Patrick too, has his own passion for Indycars, and has been involved with personal projects of rebuilding two Penske cars, the PC19 and PC26, which have been crowd pullers at various exhibitions and graced venues such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed. A PC23 is now undergoing the same treatment.
They try to focus on keeping cars as authentic as feasible, including the original engine management systems, although there are exceptions such as the six-wheel March that had never lasted more than a few laps in period. In the case of that particular car, they had to re-engineer the gearbox oiling system, and it has now completed several race distances without issue.
A recent project includes a “ground-up”’ restoration of a 1994 Mercedes DTM car running on original electronics with all the active systems working. What has to be remembered is the regulations for the DTM during that period were very liberal and allowed for many sophisticated innovations, especially in the field of the electric circuitry, electronics and computers fitted to the car. Together with all the gadgets and gizmos that enhanced performance to give the car an edge at each and every circuit it raced in period meant a superlative effort and understanding was required. However, they prevailed and now that car is believed to be the only runner of its kind.
The workshops of DT Performance resemble the cleanliness, tidiness and sterile environment of many operating theaters. Indeed, one is of the belief they are not in a garage workshop, but a laboratory. It’s this impeccable milieu that gives customers a certain air of confidence at first glance.
Not wishing to get left behind in this fast-moving technological age, DT Performance Engineering have recently added the Track Gear app for iPhone and iPad in the Apple App store, and operates the Portal to keep customers up to date on their projects. It is this transparency which underlines their ethic of customer assurance and that any client can be confident their “pride and joy” is in safe hands.
