A Wild and Interesting Car
Here’s a look at the Donkervoort D8 GTO-JD70, which was built to honor the company’s founder, Joop Donkervoort. He recently turned 70 years old. To honor him the company will make a limited run of the JD70. We reported on this car before, but now some new information is out about it.
The car features a new full-carbon-fiber body. That body is aerodynamically designed to add 176 pounds of downforce at the rear and 110 pounds at the front. This downforce plus the car’s unique shape and design allow it to make two gs of lateral acceleration. It can do that on standard road-legal semi-slick tires. That kind of lateral acceleration is on par with the McLaren Senna, according to EVO.
The car comes with a 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine sourced from Audi. The engine makes a strong 415 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. When at full acceleration the car will exert over a full g on its occupants. To put that into perspective, that’s higher than the force of gravity. The car can do a 0-62 mph sprint in just 2.8-seconds. We don’t need to tell you. That’s stupid fast. The top speed is 167 mph.
Donkervoort will keep driver aids and technology to a minimum, too. The car will get a Bosch auto rev-matching system to allow drivers to get the most of the engine. There’s no official weight number for the car yet, but it is said to be under 700kg, which would translate to about 1,500 pounds. Production will begin next year, and the car will start at €163,636, which converts to about $181,886.
