Cars on Kiawah—A Lowcountry Gathering of Interesting Automobiles

A recent addition to the schedule of US car shows was Cars on Kiawah on April 21, 2018, that’s Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Compared to 2017, this year’s show had a significant increase in exhibitors and spectators – over 250 cars and well over 2500 spectators.  It has also been noticed by Dennis Gage, “My Classic Car,” who was on the island doing a shoot for a 2019 episode of his TV show.

Cars on Kiawah is hosted by the Kiawah Island Motoring Retreat, a nonprofit organization that annually donates proceeds to the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic.  Presenting sponsor is Ally Financial, who added an interesting twist to raising funds for the free clinic – they gave away exotically-flavored popsicles to attendees and donated $1.00 to the clinic for every popsicle they gave away.

The cars were displayed at Ocean Park at the east end of the island’s gated community and next to the Ocean Course that hosted the PGA Championship in 2012 and will again in 2021.  Entry was free for spectators, although there was a charge for parking.  The cars ranged from very nice cars you might see at a Cars & Coffee event, such as the 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV that took home the Best Young Collector Award for Alexander French, to a 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza race car, possibly the most exotic car on display.

Cars on Kiawah is a fun show with a great variety of cars on display, good food, and a beautiful scenery.  If you’re anywhere near South Carolina on April 13, 2019, be sure to take in the show next year.

Some of the cars that took home awards were:

Harvey Geiger Award – Frank Spinale, 1929 Lincoln

Mayor’s Award – Merrill Benfield, 1953 Chrysler Town & Country

Chairman’s Award – Mark Moskwwitz, 1953 Allard
