The SL65 AMG Black Series was introduced in 2008 at Monterey, showcasing a significant upgrade from the standard SL65 AMG. Although it kept the 6.0-litre V12 engine, it was upgraded with larger turbochargers, a bigger inter-cooler, a new exhaust system, and a remapped ECU, increasing output to 661 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.
AMG engineers also reduced the car’s weight by 250kg (550lb) using carbon fibre panels, improving the power-to-weight ratio. This enabled the car to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed electronically capped at 199mph. Power was delivered through AMG’s Speedshift Plus five-speed automatic gearbox.
The Black Series chassis was heavily modified, featuring quicker steering, a wider track, and revised suspension for better handling. Recognizing that many owners would want to drive on racetracks, Mercedes made the multi-link rear suspension adjustable.
The car rode on AMG light-alloy wheels—19.5″ in the front and 20″ in the rear—and used powerful brakes with 6-pot front and 4-pot rear calipers. Only 350 units of the SL65 AMG Black Series were produced, making it an exclusive, high-performance model.
