The ZR-1 was the boldest Corvette ever when it launched in 1990. Unlike previous high-performance Corvettes, which offered high-powered engines as options, the ZR-1 was a fully integrated model featuring Corvette’s first and only overhead cam engine, developed in collaboration with Lotus Cars in England.

The heart of the ZR-1 was its all-aluminum 32-valve quad overhead cam V8 engine, delivering an impressive 375 bhp and 370 lb.-ft. of torque. This engineering marvel propelled the ZR-1 from 0 to 60 mph in just over four seconds and enabled it to reach a top speed of 175 mph.

The ZR-1 made its debut at the 1989 Geneva Auto Show and quickly became a media sensation, gracing the covers of nearly every automotive magazine. Priced at around $62,675—approximately $30,000 more than a standard Corvette coupe—the ZR-1 set a new record for GM passenger car pricing. It remained in production for five years before being discontinued in 1995.
