The Maserati Ghibli was a breakthrough for the brand, propelling it to the forefront of the Gran Turismo market. First introduced as a coupé at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, the Ghibli, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Carrozzeria Ghia, quickly gained recognition for its beauty and performance, rivaling Ferrari’s 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’.
Capable of reaching nearly 275 km/h, the Ghibli was both stylish and powerful, with a sleek, low profile enabled by its dry-sump engine and compact suspension design. Despite its large dimensions, the Ghibli was notably low, providing a striking visual presence.
In 1969, the Ghibli Spyder made an even bigger impact. With its elegant lines and cleverly designed soft-top that folded beneath a panel, it was considered even more stunning than the coupé. Powered by a 4.7-liter V8, the Ghibli boasted impressive acceleration and handling, making it one of the most flexible and easy-to-drive GT cars of its time.
Though production ended in 1973, with only 1,149 coupés and 125 Spyders built, the Ghibli remains an iconic sports car, celebrated for its design, performance, and value, especially in comparison to its Ferrari competitors.
