When the lights went out to start the 2013 Le Mans Legends race under rainy skies, Alex Buncombe’s pole-winning ’59 Lister Jaguar Costin slipped almost immediately into the lead and began edging away from the field. At the end of the 45-minute contest that ran as a preliminary for this year’s 24 Hours, Buncombe took a 43-second margin of victory under the checkered flag.
In his wake, an energetic scrap for 2nd place had ensued throughout the race among Jon Minshaw’s ’59 Lister Knobbly, Gary Pearson’s ’55 Jaguar D-Type, Roger Wills’ ’65 ISO Bizzarrini 5300GT and Shaun Lynn’s ’63 Cobra, with the quartet crossing the line in that order.
Carlos Monteverde initially held the runner-up spot with his yellow Ferrari 250 LM, but his day was ended early by engine trouble. The fastest lap of the race was turned in by Cobra Coupe driver Ludovic Caron, who qualified 2nd and led briefly away from the start before Buncombe went by. Caron ultimately finished 6th.
