Wicked Fast
By Bentley Warren as told to Bones Bourcier
Bentley Warren was a fan favorite known nearly as much for his sense of humor as his skill behind the wheel, but his story runs much deeper. Born Bentley Wirt Warren III into a wealthy Boston family, a year before World War II enveloped America, young Bentley found his passion in anything that involved movement, which soon led him into auto salvage and, eventually, racing. There he created the career recounted in this first-person account, as he tells us how he did it and how much fun he had doing it.
Although a midfield runner at Indianapolis in 1971 and ’75, with a double handful of top-10 finishes in Indycars during the ’70s—a best of 4th at Milwaukee’s State Fair round in 1970—Warren spent much of his career in second-echelon series such as USAC Silver Crown and NASCAR Grand National North.
He was, however, a legendary Supermodified driver in the Northeast, claiming four ISMA championships while winning many of that discipline’s most important races on multiple occasions. His record shows a Supermodified start as recently as 2011, and his latest SM race win came in 2008 at the legendary New York venue Oswego.
