Making It Faster: Tales from the Endless Search for Speed
By Dan Binks and Norm DeWitt
Everyone should know by now that the soul of motor racing lives in the hands of the mechanics who keep the cars running and work to make them ever faster. This book is about one such man, Dan Binks—whose racing record includes more than a dozen major championships and nearly a hundred pro race victories in IMSA GTU and GTP, ALMS GT, Trans-Am and NASCAR Trucks—but it is not simply a rehash of his illustriously successful career.
Instead, Binks and co-author DeWitt delve into all the elements necessary for the creation of an effective racing machine with chapters titled: The Chassis; Engine and Drivetrain; Powerplant Innovation; Tires and Brakes; Suspension; Weight, Polar Moment and CG; Aerodynamics; Electronics; and Details and Setup. Pretty much says it all.
It’s not only the thoughts of Binks and DeWitt that tell this tale, however, as a long list of well-known racing personalities also share their own stories so that the reader benefits from a broad spectrum of experience and opinion. The only real criticism we can make is that this book could have used a good proofreader, but that in no way diminishes how good it is.
