[Book Review] Hunt vs Lauda

Hunt vs Lauda

By Paul Fearnley

Everyone knows the story of this book. It is one of the great motor racing stories ever told, and has now been made into a Hollywood motion picture. Regardless, you should still read this book.

Veteran journalist Fearnley deftly takes you behind the scenes with, and inside the minds of, the story’s protagonists to portray what was perhaps F1’s fiercest champion-ship fight ever. He leads readers through the 1976 season nearly day by day, outlining all the factors that shaped the tumultuous duel between James Hunt and Niki Lauda for supremacy at the pinnacle of their sport.

The imagery accompanying Fearnley’s words comes from the archives of LAT Photographic and provides the necessary visual backdrop for the tale being told. That classic 1976 World Championship season is not, however, the sole focus here, as both drivers are also profiled before and after that year, the prior rise and subsequent “fall” of their respective careers discussed with similar insight and detail. If you care at all about F1, this is a book for you.
