[Book Review] Ford versus Ferrari: The Battle for Le Mans and Sportscar Supremacy

Ford versus Ferrari: The Battle for Le Mans and Sportscar Supremacy

By Anthony Pritchard

This should be a familiar story for most VR readers, as for many the days when this legendary Italo-American conflict raged represent the pinnacle of long-distance sports car racing’s distinguished history. This narrative could also be familiar as it is a rework of the author’s original 1968 account and several subsequent non-English-language editions, but embellished and extended now with much new information and extensive illustrative photography unavailable at that time.

This new edition begins with a brief overview of Le Mans history before addressing Ferrari’s initial participation and subsequent “ownership” of the race. It looks at the evolution of both the regulations and the cars built to fit them, which led to the grand competition that is its core.

Although the 24 Hours of Le Mans may be the heart of the story, the attendant World Sportscar Championship is also discussed, and the Appendices include both the specifications for the various competing Ferraris and Fords, and top-six results from each championship round between 1964 and 1969. Anyone interested in that period of the sport’s history will enjoy this book.
