In 2013, McLaren revealed their P1 supercar as their first hybrid-drive system. The car shares much with the MP4-12C, but employs a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) in place of the starter motor. P1’s chassis is derived from the MP4-12C’s with hydraulic springing that can lower 50mm in race mode. The rear wing is also deployed in race mode that can be used to as an air brake during braking.

The P1’s exclusivity was maintained, limited to just 375 units, all reserved by November 2013, shortly after order books opened in October. Around 75% of new P1s underwent exclusive customization through McLaren’s MSO division, elevating the average order price to approximately $1.6 million.
