Ayrton Senna da Silva Artwork
Portraits are a new and unexpected direction for Jonathan Carter. Until recently, historic cars had been the sole focus of his attention—simply because he loves them. His paintings often include partially hidden quotes or extracts taken from articles about a particular car or race, which gives him the perfect excuse to spend hours trawling either the internet or his collections of books, race programs and memorabilia looking for intriguing snippets to use.
Realizing that all his research was creating a deep fascination and respect for the drivers, he decided he’d like to try his hand at capturing motor sport’s most charismatic personalities. This portrait of a very reflective Ayrton Senna is his first large-scale figurative work, depicting the Brazilian in 1990, having achieved his second World Championship.
