Amelia Island, Florida
March 9-11, 2012
The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has established a reputation for honoring milestone events in automotive history and providing a chance for luminaries from the past to shine once more and the 2012 iteration more than lived up to the standards set by its forebears. Among the milestones celebrated was the 50th Anniversary of the Ferrari GTO and more than two years were devoted to ensuring that the gathering did justice to what is universally considered to be the most coveted of all Ferarris built. “As the first major show of the year, Amelia is fortunate in that it sometimes sets the tone for others to follow,” said Bill Warner, Concours Founder and Chairman. In setting that tone, Amelia Island also brought together a collection of automobiles that boasted celebrity ownership, including a 300 SL formerly owned by Natalie Wood (that she had once painted pink with a lipstick red interior), Tom Mix’s incomparable 812 Cord and a 1929 Model J Duesenberg owned by Ginger Rogers. Other unique cars on hand included the Chevrolet XP-819, which was the experimental rear-engined Corvette, Don and Carol Murray’s class-winning 1953 Cunningham C-3 Continental Coupe and Bill Marriott’s 1959 Chevrolet Scaglietti Corvette.
