Overview
The Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio represent the quintessence of Italian grand touring, encapsulating a rich blend of luxurious comfort, cutting-edge technology, and exhilarating performance.
Since its inception, the GranTurismo has been a symbol of Maserati's commitment to excellence, evolving through generations to meet the sophisticated demands of its discerning clientele. This article delves into the journey of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio, from their first generation to the groundbreaking electric Folgore model.
1st Generation: M145
Launched in 2007, the first-generation Maserati GranTurismo (M145) was a testament to Italian craftsmanship and design, envisioned by the legendary Pininfarina. Its flowing lines, iconic front grille, and the trident emblem immediately distinguished it as a Maserati, while under the hood, it boasted a 4.2-liter V8 engine, later upgraded to a 4.7-liter V8 in the GranTurismo S and MC variants. Producing up to 460 horsepower in the MC Stradale, the most performance-oriented model, it offered an impeccable balance of power, sound, and smoothness.
The GranCabrio, introduced in 2010, extended this grand touring experience to those craving the open-air exhilaration. It shared much of the GranTurismo's DNA, including its engine options and luxurious appointments, but with a retractable soft top that opened up in mere seconds, it provided an unmatched sense of freedom and connection to the road.
2nd Generation: M189
Anticipation built around the second generation of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio, known internally as the M189. Set to usher in a new era for the iconic models, the M189 promised advancements in performance, technology, and luxury, adapting to the changing landscape of automotive design and consumer expectations.
he mainstay of the current GranTurismo and GranCabrio range is the potent 3.0L Nettuno twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It comes in two flavors, the base Modena with 490 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, while the Trofeo gets 550 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
The M189 generation retains the iconic GranTurismo silhouette but updates it with smoother lines, modern LED lighting, and a more contemporary aesthetic overall. The interior is a blend of high-quality leather, optional carbon fiber trim, and advanced technology like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system.
The GranTurismo Folgore is the electric version of the GranTurismo and marks a pivotal moment in Maserati's storied history – its foray into the electric vehicle market. Unveiled as part of Maserati's ambitious strategy to electrify its lineup, the Folgore ("lightning" in Italian) is set to redefine what a luxury electric grand tourer can be. With a state-of-the-art electric powertrain, the Folgore is expected to deliver exhilarating performance, instant torque, and a silent yet potent driving experience, all while maintaining the grand touring characteristics that define the GranTurismo and GranCabrio heritage.
The adoption of electric power doesn't just signify a shift in propulsion but also enables a new design paradigm, where aerodynamics and efficiency are enhanced to complement the electric powertrain's characteristics. Inside, the Folgore will likely feature cutting-edge technology and luxurious materials, staying true to Maserati's commitment to comfort, style, and performance.

The base model featured a 4.2-liter V8 engine with 405 horsepower, a luxurious interior, and Maserati's distinctive blend of comfort and performance.
