Summary / Performance Table / Performance Chart / Fastest Cars Ever
This page aims to put all of the performance metrics of Citroen's entire model range (both current and historic) in one place, providing enthusiasts and prospective buyers with valuable insights into each vehicle's acceleration capabilities. We know that 0-60 times don't tell us the full performance picture, but by reviewing 0-60 mph times at least you can get a benchmark for measuring a car's acceleration prowess, and the quarter mile times, which offer a glimpse into its straight-line speed, readers can gain a deeper understanding of Citroen's performance pedigree.
Citroën, a French automaker renowned for its innovative engineering and distinctive designs, has also produced several fast and sporty models throughout its history. Here’s a look at some of the fastest Citroën cars over the decades:
Citroën SM (1970-1975): The Citroën SM was a grand tourer that combined avant-garde design with impressive performance. Powered by a Maserati-sourced 2.7-liter V6 engine, later expanded to a 3.0-liter, the SM produced around 170 horsepower. This allowed the car to reach a top speed of approximately 140 mph (225 km/h), making it one of the fastest cars of its era. Its advanced hydropneumatic suspension system provided exceptional ride comfort and handling, further enhancing its grand touring credentials.
Citroën BX 4TC (1985-1986): The BX 4TC was Citroën’s foray into Group B rallying, a period known for its highly competitive and powerful rally cars. Although its rally career was short-lived, the road-going version featured a turbocharged 2.1-liter inline-four engine producing around 200 horsepower. The BX 4TC could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7 seconds and reached a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h). Its rarity and unique design have made it a sought-after collector’s item today.
Citroën XM V6 (1989-2000): The Citroën XM was a large executive car that offered a blend of luxury, technology, and performance. The top-of-the-line XM V6 models were equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing up to 200 horsepower. This allowed the XM V6 to reach a top speed of approximately 140 mph (225 km/h). The car’s advanced hydropneumatic suspension system provided a smooth and controlled ride, making it a comfortable yet quick long-distance cruiser.
Citroën C5 V6 (2000-2008): The Citroën C5 V6 continued the tradition of combining performance with comfort. Powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 210 horsepower, the C5 V6 could reach a top speed of around 146 mph (235 km/h). It featured Citroën’s Hydractive suspension system, which offered excellent ride quality and handling, making it a refined and capable performer in the executive car segment.
Citroën DS3 Racing (2010-2015): In the 2010s, Citroën introduced the DS3 Racing, a hot hatch variant of the popular DS3. Developed by Citroën Racing, the car featured a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 207 horsepower. This allowed the DS3 Racing to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 146 mph (235 km/h). Its sporty suspension setup and aggressive styling made it a favorite among hot hatch enthusiasts.
These cars demonstrate Citroën’s ability to blend innovative design and engineering with impressive performance across different eras. From the luxurious and futuristic SM to the rally-inspired BX 4TC and the modern hot hatch DS3 Racing, Citroën has produced several models that appeal to driving enthusiasts and highlight the brand’s unique approach to performance and style.
