Company Profile – Alan Taylor Company

Alan Taylor

When Alan Taylor says he grew up in the restoration industry…he’s not kidding. At the tender age of eight, Taylor began working in his father’s automotive upholstery business. By the time he was 18, Taylor had established his own upholstery business, including work on a variety of classic cars.

In the following years, Taylor abandoned the upholstery business to specialize in aerospace welding. However, by the late 1970s, he returned to the automotive world with new skill sets that saw him doing more sophisticated work on classic cars, in addition to upholstery. As a result, by the 1980s, Taylor was taking on full restorations. Finally, in 1993, Alan Taylor Company Inc., was formed in Escondido, California, where Taylor forged a name for himself not only in the restoration of special vehicles, but especially in the area of prewar French classics from Delahaye, Bugatti and Talbot-Lago.

From his 8,000-sq.ft. facility, Taylor and his eight employees provide for the full restoration and maintenance of a wide variety of automobiles. While the French classics are what Taylor and company are best known for, they have also carved a reputation for themselves in the Auburn/Cord world, as well. However, Taylor and company restore and maintain a wide variety of vehicles as evidenced by the fact that his shop currently has everything from a 1910 Maxwell to a 1960 Buick.

In terms of capabilities, Taylor says that they are capable of doing all aspects of a full restoration in house, with the exception of chrome plating. Taylor’s facilities include: a high-end paint shop; upholstery; mechanical and machining; sheet metal fabrication, as well as pattern making for the bespoke casting of parts.

Of particular interest is Taylor’s expertise in Cotal and Wilson preselector gearboxes. Not only are they one of the only specialists in the United States knowledgeable in the restoration and maintenance of these rare transmissions, but they are also one of the few suppliers of parts for these gearboxes, worldwide.

With literally hundreds of major concours winners to his credit, Alan Taylor is a trusted name in the world of concours restorations.
