A Closer Look at the Ferrari 296 GTS

A hybrid supercar that shatters expectations

Ferrari has long been defined by its high-revving V12s and powerful V8 engines that embody performance, power, and Italian flair. However, in 2021, Ferrari introduced a groundbreaking shift with the 296—a high-hybrid V6, not the expected V12 or V8.

To address these concerns, the 296 GTS, the convertible version of the 296 GTB, provides insight into Ferrari’s evolving approach. The 296 GTS is powered by a 2.9L V6 engine, a 7.5 kWh hybrid battery, and a 167-horsepower electric motor, producing 819 horsepower. The car accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and hits 124 mph in 7.3 seconds. Despite being a convertible, the GTS retains a top speed of 205 mph.

This move sparked controversy, leading some to question whether Ferrari was abandoning its core principles and if it was still a “true” Ferrari. To answer these questions, let’s look at the 296 GTS in this video from AutoTrader and explore the evolution that led to this daring move.
