Riverside International Raceway
By Pete Lyons
Among the most over-used terms in our lexicon is “Iconic,” but in some cases there is simply no other word that fits, and this is one of those, a book about an iconic place, written by perhaps the most iconic motorsports writer of his generation. I refer, of course, to Pete Lyons’ new book about the late, lamented Riverside Raceway in Southern California.
Comprehensive is another word that applies here, both to the book and the track itself, for virtually every kind of racing imaginable was held at Riverside. There were sports cars, Indycars, Formula One, Can-Am, Trans-Am, Formula 5000, GTP, NASCAR, IROC, motorcycles, drag racing, midget racing, even off-road racing and, of course, vintage cars. Pete’s imaginative text capsules about the various eras and disciplines are the core of the book, but they are surrounded by an excellent selection of photography from a variety of sources, all embellished with captions that tell even more of Riverside’s riveting tale. I could go on, but why? All you really need to know is that if you have any interest at all in Riverside, you need this book.
