Donington Historic Festival (2014) – To Mark Maserati Centennial

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Maserati, Motor Racing Legends and the Maserati Club UK are staging a historic Maserati race at this year’s Donington Historic Festival, May 3-5. Running as a doubleheader over two of the Festival’s three days, the Maserati Centenary Trophy is for all types of Maseratis and OSCAs built before 1966.

The Italian marque’s history in motorsport goes back to 1926—a dozen years after its founding in 1914—when Alfieri Maserati took his Tipo 26 to a class victory in that year’s Targa Florio. In 1927, Maserati won the Italian constructors title as Alfieri’s brother, Ernesto, claimed the Italian drivers title. Further successes followed in subsequent decades as Maserati produced a series of iconic models that enjoyed success in Grand Prix and sportscar racing, as well as taking two Indy 500 wins. Perhaps the pinnacle of Maserati’s achievements was achieved in 1957 when Juan Manuel Fangio drove a 250F to the Formula One World Drivers Championship.
